First-grade classes in the Eden schools are a bit smaller than they otherwise would have been, now hovering at 20 pupils per class. School officials said they are pleased after receiving a $29,675 federal grant to help reduce class sizes in the early grades. Previously, Eden's first-grade classes were pegged to have between 23 and possibly as many as 25 pupils per class when administrators reviewed enrollment numbers over the summer.
The grant pays for the bulk of the salary of newly hired teacher Katherine Universal, who started at the Grover L. Priess School this fall, when the district added a first-grade section. The district is paying her remaining fringe benefits that are not covered by the grant.
