Frontier Asphalt, a Hamburg paving contractor, has been fined $1,000 by the state Public Service Commission for violating natural gas safety regulations during excavation work near underground gas mains.

The PSC said it fined Frontier and R.J. Collins Construction of Holtsville $1,000 apiece because they did not maintain the minimum clearance required between powered equipment and underground gas mains.

During the incident, Frontier's equipment operators damaged a gas main at Second and Main streets in Newfane on July 26, the PSC said.
