An elderly Moyer Road couple was roused out of bed early Saturday and called 911 for help when a basement fire set off their smoke alarm, sheriff's deputies said.

Volunteer from the Adams and Frontier fire companies quickly extinguished the fire after Milo Barber, 87, and his wife, Isabel, 81, got out of their house at 3618 Moyer Road uninjured, Deputy Kevin M. Smith said.

Fire officials said the blaze was caused by an electrical problem in a basement refrigerator. Smith said the fire caused an undetermined amount of smoke damage to the basement.
