MONTH-OLD BABY FOUND DEAD IN MICROWAVE OVEN

Authorities are investigating the death of a month-old baby found in a microwave oven in his parents' home.

Neighbors said they heard the father of Joseph Lewis Martinez screaming shortly before sheriff's deputies arrived at the house early Thursday. Lanexa is a rural community in New Kent County, about 35 miles east of Richmond.

"That was his pride and joy, that baby," said Steve Walker, a friend of father Joe Martinez, 18.

The microwave oven had been turned on, but no cause of death has been released. An autopsy was to be performed.

According to Sheriff Farrar W. Howard Jr., a deputy responded to a call at the home shortly before 6 a.m. about the baby being missing, and the body was found soon after the deputy arrived.

Howard said both parents were at home when the deputy arrived.
