Alone at Last
Decided to stay home and get chores done.

GRAND OPENING -- A band will perform swing music, and refreshments will be served from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the grand opening of the Orchard Glen Residences and Carriage Homes, a full service rental retirement community at 6055 Armor Road in Orchard Park. APPETITE FOR BIRDS -- The folks that know their birds, the Buffalo Audubon Society, plan a full menu of events to coincide with groundbreaking ceremonies at 1 p.m. Saturday for the expansion of their Beaver Meadow Nature Center at 1610 Welch Road in North Java. Besides guided nature walks and animal exhibits there will be a chicken barbecue. . . .

FIRST NIGHT BUFFALO sent word that Dixon Ward, winger for the Buffalo Sabres, and his wife, Kerry, will serve as honorary co-chairmen of the upcoming alcohol free New Year's Eve celebration to welcome the millennium. They join First Night co-chairs John Rigas, chairman, chief executive officer and president of Adelphia Cable and the Sabres, and his wife, Doris.

Returning for their second year as co-chairmen are William McHugh, executive vice president of Independent Health and president of the Independent Health Foundation, and his wife, Susan. . . .

PRICE IS RIGHT -- The Kiwanis Club of Wales is sponsoring an "eat in, takeout or drive thru" chicken barbecue starting at 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 10, at the Wales Center Fire Hall, 12300 Big Tree Road. The tab for half a chicken, slaw, potato salad, roll, butter, dessert and beverage is $6.50 for adults ($6 presale) and $4 at the door for children 5 to 12.
