How many people have to die on the I-190 downtown before responsible officials take a serious look at the deficiencies of this road? Work now in progress will not correct the conditions that have caused the deaths of at least 10 Erie County residents on this stretch in recent years.
Driving lanes are being narrowed to provide a four-foot shoulder. But that is not even wide enough for a car, and a broken-down truck will protrude about five feet into traffic -- a dangerous situation.
Erie County should insist upon a review by independent engineers. The Thruway Authority has plenty of money available for elimination of this hazard, but has shown no interest in doing so. Thousands of motorists are at risk every day while the tolls they pay are used for such off-road projects as beautifying the Barge Canal.
