A prison guard has been convicted of sexually abusing an 18-year-old female inmate, but he was acquitted on a more serious charge of sodomy.
Michael Ramsey, 35, faces up to a year in jail when he sentenced Nov. 17 on a misdemeanor count of second-degree sexual abuse for fondling an inmate at the Albion Correctional Facility in July 1998.
He had been charged with felony sodomy for allegedly forcing the 18-year-old inmate to perform oral sex in a staff bathroom. An Orleans County jury handed down the verdict Monday.
District Attorney Joseph Cardone said he was puzzled by Monday's verdict in light of convincing DNA evidence. A forensic scientist testified that there was a one-in-54 quadrillion chance that the semen was not Ramsey's.
