The man driving the car involved in a fatal crash Monday morning on Grand Island faces numerous charges, including vehicular manslaughter, Erie County sheriff's deputies said.
Sergei Dovgaliuk, 36, of Sacramento, Calif., was killed after the car in which he was riding slammed into a loaded dumpster in the parking lot of the Holiday Inn, deputies said. The impact knocked the refuse container several feet, fire officials said.
Driver Sergiy Baranovsky, 37, of Linthicum, Md., was speeding east on Whitehaven Road about 2:30 a.m. when he failed to stop at the stop sign at East River Road and hit the dumpster, deputies said. Besides second-degree vehicular manslaughter, Baranovsky was charged with driving while intoxicated, imprudent speed, failure to stop at a stop sign, and not wearing a seat belt.
Baranovsky suffered a bruised kidney, rib injuries and various cuts, deputies said. He was listed in fair condition in a secured unit of Erie County Medical Center.
Both victims are construction workers assigned to a renovation project at the Holiday Inn, according to Peter McMahon, deputy chief of the Grand Island Fire Company.
