Two Democrats have announced their candidacies for the Cattaraugus County Legislature in District 5, consisting of the Towns of Ellicottville, Franklinville, Freedom, Farmersville, Ashford and Machias.

Three legislators will be elected.

The Democrats are William Brown, who operates the Ilex Inn bed and breakfast in Ellicottville and is a former chairman of the county's Tourism Promotion Agency, and Daniel McCandless of Machias, who also operates a bed and breakfast.

They are campaigning to lower property taxes by identifying alternative sources of county revenue and reducing spending, and are committed to protecting the county's water supply from landfill pollution and underground radioactive contaminants.

"Upon election, we plan to introduce legislation to accomplish these goals," Brown said in a statement. "We do not see ourselves as politicians, but as ordinary citizens who want to make a difference."

Incumbent Republicans seeking four-year terms in District 5 are Gerard J. Fitzpatrick of Ellicottville, Gary M. Felton of Machias and Patrick J. McCrea of Franklinville.

McCandless, Fitzpatrick and McCrea are also candidates on the Independence and Conservative party lines.
