Will we ever get it right in this town? For Buffalo, desperately searching to find a reason to bring people to the city, the decision to cover up the Commercial Slip is just plain dumb. What could be a better draw to our waterfront than the original canal and surrounding streets? We have the real thing, so why do we need to settle for a cheap imitation?
Instead of using the $27 million to excavate slips for visiting ships and build a replica of the Commercial Slip, we should spend it on restoration of the original slip and surrounding streets so that people can walk these historic cobblestones and view this famous waterway as it was for over 100 years.
Thankfully our leaders in the early 1800s had the vision and wisdom to fight to make Buffalo the western terminus of the Erie Canal. They knew the importance the Erie Canal can have on our waterfront's rebirth. Let's not cover up our history. Let's celebrate it.
