JURY SELECTION UNDER WAY IN STOMPING DEATH OF MAN

Jury selection began today in the murder trial of a man accused of killing Buffalo landlord Gary P. Trzaska.

Walter Nance, a Miller Avenue resident who was 16 when Trzaska was stomped to death Oct. 2, is on trial before Erie County Judge Sheila A. DiTullio on second-degree murder and robbery charges.

Trzaska, 41, of Cheektowaga was attacked late at night on Broadway near Titus Avenue after collecting rent from tenants at properties in that area. Although authorities and Trzaska's family initially thought Trzaska was a hate-crime victim because he is gay and white -- his alleged attackers are black -- investigators later concluded he was killed because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Dennis Straughter, 19, of Sidney Street, also indicted in the crime, will stand trial on murder charges in January.
