The Jaskula family of South Buffalo will get a vacation after all, thanks to their first-place win in SUPER JINGO Game No. 905 -- a trip for two anywhere Continental Airlines flies in the continental United States, plus $500.
"This is a welcome surprise. I am so excited," said Mark Jaskula. "I almost don't believe this. At first I thought it may have been a prank call."
With two babies and the recent purchase of a new home, the Jaskulas put off vacationing.
"This is so wonderful that we will be able to travel somewhere. It is an added surprise for our third wedding anniversary, which we recently celebrated," Jaskula said.
Entering each week is a joint effort for the couple.
Jaskula said, "My wife fills in the numbers religiously." When the entries are completed, he drops them off at The News.
His wife, Sheila, who works for the Buffalo Police Department as a report technician, will decide where the couple will vacation.
"Since she does the work of filling out the entries, I'll let her decide," said Jaskula. He mentioned California as a possibility.
Other winners are:
Carol Edwards of Niagara Falls -- Two-night stay in SkyDome Hotel, Toronto.
Natalie Devic of Lackawanna -- Two tickets to five Buffalo Sabres games.
Billy Schrader of Strykersville -- Showroom car detail.
Doreen Cordaro of Lancaster -- Salvatore's gift certificate and show tickets.
"Oh my gosh, I am shocked," said Ms. Edwards of her second-place win. In four years of dedicated playing, she had never won.
"I was about to give up. I'm glad I didn't," she said. "This is wonderful, you have brightened my day!"
Ms. Edwards is unsure of whom she will take on the trip but says that she enjoys visiting Toronto.
"No matter who I take, I'm sure it will be fun," she said.
She and her guest will be treated to a two-night stay in SkyDome Hotel, breakfast in the Bistro in SkyDome and tickets to the SkyDome Tour Experience.
"I did? Oh, my God. I don't believe it," said Mrs. Devic of her third-place prize of two tickets to five Buffalo Sabres games.
"That's really wonderful. I've been playing SUPER JINGO since the beginning. A short time ago, I won theater passes for two, which was my first win."
Mrs. Devic's family includes three children, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
"With such a large family, I'll have to think about how we're going to divide up the tickets," she said.
Ms. Schrader was excited to hear of her fourth-prize showroom car detail.
"We did? Oh my goodness. He could have his truck done," she said of her husband Billy's Dodge pickup. "That's his treasure. He'll love a professional detailing."
"I have played from the very beginning. I've won a a few prizes along the way but never anything big," Mrs. Schrader said.
She is office manager at a family medical practice; her husband is a Buffalo firefighter.
Ms. Cordaro had an additional reason to celebrate with her fifth-place win. She and husband, Angelo, recently celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary.
Aside from playing one to two entries a week, Mrs. Cordaro is active in Tai Chi classes at the West Seneca Senior Citizens Center.
"I go with friends. It keeps the bones moving," she said.
"I am looking forward to a nice evening out with Angelo," she said.
The night out includes a Salvatore's gift certificate and theater passes.
"This is a nice prize. We enjoy the theater and get there when we can, and Salvatore's is a beautiful restaurant," she said.
