Mark E. Herberger, 50, who operated the former Green Thumb gardening and landscaping service, died Friday (Sept. 17, 1999) in Erie County Medical Center, of injuries in a one-car crash Sept. 1.

The crash occurred on Upper Mountain Road, as he was en route to classes at Niagara County Community College.

A former Olcott resident, Herberger operated Green Thumb in the 1970s and '80s. He also was a counselor at the former Olcott Youth Center.

Herberger was a 1971 honors graduate of Geneseo State College, where he majored in economics. He graduated in 1967 from high school at the Buffalo Diocesan Preparatory Seminary.

A dog fancier, he also enjoyed music and photography.

Survivors include his father, Donald F.; stepmother, Elizabeth Pilkey Herberger; four brothers, Thomas of Newfane, James of Getzville, Michael of Hamburg and John; and five sisters, Theresa Layer of Orchard Park, Donna Osterreicher of Williamsville, Patricia Denny of Clarence Center, Ann Robbins of Orlando, Fla., and Virginia Corttis of North Grosvenordale, Conn.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Main Street, Olcott. Prayers will be said at 10:30 in Rutland-Corwin Funeral Home, 2670 Main St., Newfane. Burial will be in St. Charles Cemetery, Newfane.
