Raisa Gorbachev, the wife of former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, is suffering from an infection in addition to acute leukemia and is expected to remain in a life-threatening condition over the next few days, her doctor said Friday.
Dr. Thomas Buechner said the infection was discovered on Sunday after Mrs. Gorbachev went into circulatory shock, and doctors are still trying to determine the cause.
Mrs. Gorbachev, 67, who was admitted to the Muenster University Clinic on July 25, is on a respirator to help her breathe.
She originally underwent chemotherapy and had shown some improvement. Doctors were planning a bone marrow transplant using her younger sister as a donor, but infection has put that off.
He said the leukemia has continued to spread, worsening her condition.
