ASBESTOS TESTS SHOW SCHOOL IS SAFE

Smallwood Drive Elementary School was closed Friday when layers of dust were found on small portions of a counter and floor in a construction area where asbestos had been removed earlier this week.

Dennis Ford, superintendent of Amherst Central Schools, said he closed the school as a precautionary measure after the dust was discovered about 6 a.m. by a custodian. Tests later Friday showed conditions were safe and there was no unusual concentration of asbestos in the air, he said.

Classes will resume as scheduled on Tuesday. District schools are closed Monday because of Yom Kippur.

The dust was found in the cafeteria, which is being expanded as a part of the district's $8.1 million capital construction project.
