Although The News article "Franczyk accused of racial political ploy in '89" featured accusations that were offensive, I must say Franczyk's defense of his actions was far worse. He almost appeared proud of this cheap type of petty racial politicking. He seemed to say it's good politics to send different mailings to people based on their race.
It seems outrageous to me. The pictures in The News -- the black and white versions side by side -- were stunning and somewhat frightening. Why couldn't he have had one version showing him with both blacks and whites, touting his accomplishments and trying to promote harmony in a mixed district like Fillmore?
Aren't the needs of both races very similar? Don't both want safe streets, good schools and a clean environment? His separate mailings showed crass insensitivity.
