The Akron Central School Board is enlisting the help of community residents in the search for a new superintendent.

In a letter to Newstead Supervisor Donald C. Holmes, board President Collette Remington detailed plans to seek a replacement for Allen R. Derry, who is leaving the district to become superintendent in
New Paltz.

"The board is conducting a formal search, and we would like our community to be part of the process," she said. "We invite one member of the Town of Newstead government to serve on this committee."

An advisory committee appointed by the board next Wednesday will be required to attend all meetings, commit to the process and its expectations and respect the absolute confidentiality of all candidates throughout and after the selection process, Mrs. Remington said.

The panel will begin reviewing files of preliminary candidates and provide input to the board Oct. 18 and 19.

Interviews conducted by the board throughout October and November will eventually narrow the field to two of the most-qualitied individuals. The goal is to select a new superintendent by December and then have him or her begin duties in February.

Donald Oglivie, the Superintendent of Erie 1 Board of Cooperative Educational Services, is assisting the School Board in the search for a new superintendent, which is likely to be a six-month process.
