Canoeists, kayakers and others will benefit from the city's plan to spend nearly $350,000 to improve the Genesee River waterfront.
The City Council approved the spending package Wednesday night for new boat launch ramps and docks, bike paths and walkways and to convert a maintenance facility into a water sports center.
The city will take on debt of $250,000 to finance the largest portion of the project. It will also use a $100,000 grant from the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. Construction is to be completed by May.
The city also is spending $100,000 to turn an old freight train terminal into a dock for boats traveling the Erie Canal and the Genesee River.
