Superintendent Terry Wolfenden announced at Tuesday's Board of Education meeting that she will retire when her contract expires on Dec. 31.

Superintendent since 1985, she served 30 years in the district including as a social studies teacher at Dunkirk High School, administrator for programs for the disabled and Middle School principal.

She was the first woman to be appointed to a superintendent's position in Western New York. The district, which does not have an assistant superintendent, can ask Erie 2-Chautauqua-Cattaraugus BOCES for help in the search.
