Common Council candidate Betty Jean Grant today was officially named the winner of Tuesday's Democratic primary election in the University District.

The final Board of Elections tally showed her polling 1,826 votes to 1,611 for Bonnie Russell and 985 for Martha Niland Lamparelli.

Final votes from two of the district's 36 polling machines were not included in Tuesday's count because of an error by poll workers, Board of Election officials said Wednesday.

The machines serve districts -- University 10 and 20 -- having a total of more than 950 registered Democrats.

According to officials, workers inadvertently locked voting records inside the machines after the polls closed and before reporting the final counts. The locked voting machines were transported to a warehouse and were checked this morning.
