Lonnie Nielsen of Crag Burn Country Club defeated Rob Horak, 2 and 1, to win the Western New York PGA Match Play Championship held over two days at Monroe CC.

In the semifinals, Nielsen defeated Kirk Stauffer, 6 and 5, while Horak ousted Tim Fries, 1 up.

In Stafford, Michael Sanger of Fishers Island Golf Club shot a 1-under-par 71 at Stafford Country Club in the opening round of the New York State Men's Senior Championship. Sanger finished strong, shooting 2-under on the back nine. Entered in the age 55-59 category, this is Sanger's first time playing in the NYSGA event.

Defending champion James Infantino (60-64) of Rochester opened with a 73.

Richard Davidson of Springville CC and Paddy Cawdery of Gowanda CC, both in the 55-59 age group, led the Buffalo District entrants, with Davidson at 78 and Cowdery at 79. Also in 55-59, Jun Young of River Oaks shot 82 and Gerald Weeks, River Oaks, had 86.

Patrick Lalley of Gowanda was the Buffalo District leader in 60-64 with 84 and Gordon Meccay of Glen Oak led 65-69 with 80.
