MINOR INJURIES REPORTED AS SUV HITS SCHOOL BUS

A Grand Island man escaped with minor injuries this morning after his sport-utility vehicle rammed the back of a school bus stopped on Bedell Road on Grand Island, Erie County Sheriff's Department officers said.

John A. Loncher, 33, of Carter Drive said he was blinded by the sun and didn't see that the bus -- carrying 23 high school students -- had stopped to pick up a passenger at 7:20 a.m. on the 1800 block of Bedell, Deputy Michael J. Dalfonso said.

Loncher, whose vehicle was totaled by the impact, was taken to Kenmore Mercy Hospital in the Town of Tonawanda for treatment of minor face, neck and chest injuries.

Two students, including one boarding the bus steps when the accident occurred -- complained of minor injuries but later were picked up by their parents, who waived injury reports, Dalfonso said.

The bus was only slightly damaged and continued to the school, where health workers checked the students before they went to class, he said.
