STATE POSTS LOWEST RATE OF DWI DEATHS

New York State had the lowest rate of alcohol-involved traffic deaths -- 1.38 per 100,000 population -- last year, according to figures released Monday by the DWI Resource Center in Albuquerque.

Wyoming led the nation with 11.44; followed by Mississippi, 10.68; Montana, 9.20; New Mexico, 8.75; and Alabama, 7.56.

The latest rankings are based on newly published information from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration on deaths in traffic accidents involving someone with a blood alcohol content of 0.10 percent or higher -- the limit in most states for determining whether a driver is legally intoxicated.
