Police arrested a Lewiston man on several traffic charges after he allegedly drove the wrong way on the Robert Moses Expressway at 3 o'clock in the morning.
Edwin J. Hummel, 33, of Upper Mountain Road, was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, failing to yield to an emergency vehicle, driving the wrong way and aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle.
Officer James Riddle of the state parks police first reported seeing a car traveling north in the southbound lanes early Sunday morning. After refusing to pull over, the driver abandoned his car on the median and disappeared.
Officer Patrick K. Hennegan of the city police found the driver and returned him to the scene of the accident, in which a light standard was left lying across the roadway.
Police said Hummel failed all field tests for sobriety and was held on $1,300 bail to await a court appearance.
