CENSUS PROBLEMS AIRED

The Millennium census will bring problems of undercounting, just as in past censuses, Trustee Susanne Marsh said in discussing the matter at a workshop meeting of the Village Board prior to the regular meeting Monday night.

"April 1 is the count date with follow-up in June. The problem is with students who live off-campus if they don't answer the questionnaire, they're gone by mid-May," she said. "The village has about 7,000 residents without the college."

Mayor Frank Pagano said about 2,000 students are in the community outside the college dormitories. "We need an accurate count," he said.

Mrs. Marsh said letters were written to state and federal officials in 1990 and everyone agreed on the number of housing units in the village. The problem was the number of transients.

The college dormitories are considered a group living unit and the college gives the number of residents for the census.

"That one's easy," Mrs. Marsh observed.
