AUGUST COOLER THAN NORMAL AS RAIN TOTAL HELPED AREA

The rain just about everybody was waiting for finally came in the last week of August.

But the rains were very localized, National Weather Service meteorologist Steve McLaughlin said, with some areas getting little and other areas, including the weather service's Buffalo Niagara International Airport station, getting above average rainfall.

"The monthly total of 4.38 inches was enough to give Buffalo its first above-normal rainfall month since January and only the second of the last 13 months," he said.

Still, a mild to moderate drought continued: Buffalo's 12-month precipitation deficit through August was at 9.25 inches, about 25 percent less than normal.

The average temperature of 67.9 degrees was slightly more than a degree below normal, giving Buffalo its first cool month since March.

The summer (June through August) was the 14th warmest in the last 57 years of records at the airport and the third driest in the last 42 years.
