A 22-year-old Castile man who was critically injured when his car slammed into a utility pole on Route 39 was listed in satisfactory condition Sunday in Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, a hospital official said.
Wyoming County sheriff's deputies said Joshua Helmer of Route 39 was traveling east on Route 39 when he lost control of his car on a curve near Tenefly Road shortly after 10:30 p.m. Friday, slamming into the pole and demolishing the car.
He was first taken to Wyoming County Community Hospital in Warsaw with head trauma and internal injuries, then transferred by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial.
Sheriff's deputies said they believed the accident was alcohol related and that blood alcohol tests were being conducted. Helmer was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, they added.
