Former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and current ESPN analyst Ron Jaworski is part of a group that has been awarded an Arena Football League expansion franchise that will begin play as early as 2001.

Jim Drucker, the arena league commissioner from 1994 to 1996, and Craig Stein, owner of the Reading, Pa., Phillies minor-league baseball club, are the group's general partners.

Jaworski, who will run the team's football operations, is one of five limited partners. The others remain unidentified.

"I'd been looking at the arena league for six years, but the timing was never right," said Jaworski, a Lackawanna native. "It's rock-and-roll football. I have a 15-year-old son and he just loves the action."

The group will decide on a home site in February. Drucker said Philadelphia, Washington and Salt Lake City are among five cities being considered.
