Sudden impact

Kevin Thomas returned a fumble 99 yards on the final play of the game to give UNLV a 27-24 victory over Baylor. Leading, 24-21, Baylor had a first down at the Rebels' 8 with less than 20 seconds left and UNLV out of timeouts. Baylor's Darrel Bush took a handoff and tried to score when linebacker James Sunia forced a fumble at the 1, and Thomas picked up the ball 1 yard deep in the end zone.

Stunning endings

Purdue's Mike Rose stopped Notre Dame quarterback Jarious Jackson on third-and-goal with less than 15 seconds left to preserve the 20th-ranked Boilermakers' 28-23 victory over No. 16 Notre Dame.

Jimmy Williams scored on a 65-yard punt return with 1:41 left, and Vanderbilt erased a 25-point second-half deficit to edge Northern Illinois, 34-31.

Freshman backup Nick Walker threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Etu Molden to lift Montana to a 41-38 double-overtime victory over Sacramento State.

Shy of perfection

Joe Hamilton completed 22 of 25 passes for 387 yards and four touchdowns as Georgia Tech lost to Florida State, 41-35.

Scoring threat

Eric Crouch became the first Nebraska player since Johnny Rodgers in 1973 to run, throw and catch a pass for a touchdown in the No. 5 Cornhuskers' 45-0 win over California.


Miami of Ohio's Travis Prentice rushed for 163 yards on 29 carries and scored two touchdowns in a 43-27 loss to West Virginia. Prentice moved ahead of Pittsburgh's Tony Dorsett into fourth place on the NCAA major-college career scoring list with 366 points.

Solid improvement

Wake Forest gained 320 yards on the ground in a 34-15 win over Army. Last season, the Demon Deacons were ranked last in rushing offense, averaging just 65 yards a game.

Setting a record

Chad Pennington's first touchdown pass of the night gave him 64 scoring passes since Marshall joined the Mid-American Conference in 1997. That broke the MAC record held by Brian McClure of Bowling Green.
