How fortunate I feel that I followed my instincts and became a patient of the kidney-dialysis transplant team at Erie County Medical Center. My first nephrologist wanted me to go to the Cleveland Clinic for the workup and subsequent transplant. However, because of a personal referral and my desire to stay closer to my family, I decided to place my trust in ECMC.
From the beginning of my care, I was treated with such kindness and compassion. Although the preliminary testing for a transplant can be gruelling, members of the team do everything in their power to help their patients get through it. They set up all of the appointments and keep a watchful eye on the results, as well as schedule continuous check-ups.
The transplant surgical team is exceptional and very dedicated. No words can express my gratitude to them and the nurses in the trauma unit. One week after my kidney transplant this past March, I had a heart attack and spent 10 days in the cardiac-care unit. The care given by everyone I encountered was outstanding.
So fear not, my fellow Western New Yorkers. We have, without a doubt, the finest medical facility right here in our own back yard.
