Subbing for injuried starter Bryan Roland, sophomore quarterback Mark Nachreiner came to the rescue for the Canisius football team on Saturday night.

Nachreiner (North Tonawanda) threw a touchdown pass and ran 10 yards for a clinching score in the fourth quarter as the Golden Griffins broke a seven-game losing streak by beating the University of Rochester, 26-14, before a crowd of 3,164 at Fauver Stadium.

Roland (St. Joe's), who fired first-half TD strikes to Jake Coppola and Mike Minnuto, suffered a lacerated chin early in the second half when struck by an opponent's helmet. The wound required 11 stitches.

Sophomore running back Dan Tryon (Amherst) gained 18 yards on a fourth-and-1 from the Rochester 36 to set up Nachreiner's winning 6-yard TD toss to Minnuto.

The Griffs visit St. Peter's at 1 p.m. next Saturday.

MEN'S SOCCER: Scott Lis and Brandis Lyn scored five minutes apart in the first half and Niagara led the rest of the way in a 3-2 win over host St. Joseph's in the First Union Hawk Classic in Philadelphia.

The Purple Eagles, who play Temple for the title at 3 p.m. today, also got a goal from John Turner in the second half.

Hartwick beat St. Bonaventure, 3-1, in the first round of the Mayor's Cup XXIV in Oneonta as Tom Lemmon had the Bonnies' only goal. Bona plays Rider at 1 p.m. today.

Jesse Mankowski's overtime goal, on a feed from Adam Parker, gave Fredonia State a 2-1 victory over Allegheny in the first round of the Four Points Sheraton Harborfront Classic in Fredonia. Chris Chase got the win in goal for the Blue Devils (2-1), who meet Kenyon at 2 p.m. today.

Joshua Meyers (Alden) scored three goals and Jeremy Dobson (Alden) added a goal and two assists to lead Erie CC past Canton Tech, 4-1.

WOMEN'S SOCCER: Kathleen Plis' second-half goal was the only scoring as Buffalo State knocked off host Fredonia State, 1-0, in the Four Points Sheraton Harborfront Classic. Mary Palaimo assisted on the winning tally while Laura Williams got the shutout in goal. The Bengals play Cazenovia and Fredonia meets Hilbert at noon today. Hilbert lost to Cazenovia, 5-1, Saturday with Denelle Martin scoring the goal.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: The University at Buffalo had its hands full with homestanding Montana State as the Bulls fell, 15-9, 15-5, 15-7, despite 10 kills by Heather Barfuss.

The Bulls also lost to Villanova, 15-6, 10-15, 15-12, 15-5 as Keri Shiels had 17 kills for UB. In a 13-15, 15-5, 15-6, 16-10 loss to New Orleans, UB got 16 kills from Shiels.

Niagara lost two matches in the University of Pittsburgh tournament, falling to Radford, 15-10, 15-10, 15-4 and Akron, 15-6, 15-7, 15-3. Bree Feist had eight kills against Radford while Laurie Haefner had 13 passes against Akron.
