The Straits Times newspaper of Singapore reported that a Texas man was sentenced last month to six months in jail and fined the equivalent of $590 for disrupting a Singapore Airlines flight en route to Singapore from Los Angeles via Tokyo.

The report said the passenger, identified as Sanil Shetty Kumar, 38, of Garland, Texas, tried to open an emergency exit door, and threatened those aboard with death after shouting vulgarities and demanding to see the captain, according to court proceedings recounted by the newspaper. Court papers said he had been drinking. When he tried to open an exit in business class, crew members and passengers restrained him, and he was turned over to police upon landing in Singapore.
