A rookie Erie County sheriff's deputy made his first arrest Saturday night by apprehending a Grand Island man accused of leaving the scene of a two-car crash on Baseline Road.
From his patrol car, Deputy Bradley Girdler noticed a car with a damaged wheel and pursued it for a short time before the driver -- Scott Hammott, 27, of Baseline Road -- bailed out and began running away, other deputies said. Grider then chased Hammott on foot through several yards and over fences, reports said.
Hammott was charged with second-and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident, driving without a license, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration. The Sheriff's Department said Saturday was Girdler's first day on the job alone.
