Alcohol is believed to have played a role in a crash late Friday that critically injured a Castile man, who lost control of his car on a Route 39 curve near Tenefly Road. Wyoming County sheriff's deputies said Joshua Helmer, 22, of Route 39, suffered head trauma and internal injuries when his car slammed into a utility pole shortly after 10:30 p.m., deputies said.
"There's no doubt there was alcohol involved, we just don't know to what exent," Wyoming County Sheriff's Sgt. Edward Till said Saturday. Blood-alcohol tests are being conducted, he added.
Helmer was eastbound when he lost control. He was not wearing a seat belt, Till said. Helmer was flown by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, where he was listed in critical condition Saturday night.
