A Grand Island man and two Buffalo men were arrested early Saturday on charges of possessing more than nine pounds of marijuana after police said they spotted them smoking the substance and drinking alcohol in a car on Amherst Street, authorities said.

Kenneth A. Pope, 27, of Amy Drive, Grand Island; Robert Arcury, 36, of Bridgeman Street; and Patrick Conway, 25, of Minnesota Avenue, were charged with felony second-degree possession of marijuana.

Northwest District Officers Scott Malec and James Hacker said they noticed the car parked on the 600 block of Amherst Street at about 12:15 a.m. and saw a lit marijuana cigarette and open bottles of beer.

Police also charged Pope with third-degree escape after they said he fled the scene.
