THREE U.S. MISSIONARIES GUILTY OF GUN SMUGGLING

Three U.S. missionaries, caught trying to carry guns on board a civilian airliner, were found guilty Friday of possessing weapons of war and gun smuggling.

Judge Ismael Adam of the Harare High Court said the men violated Zimbabwe security laws by carrying unlicensed offensive weapons and trying to transport guns in their baggage on a Zurich-bound Swissair flight from Harare on March 7. Adam said he will sentence the men on Monday.

Gary Blanchard, 36, John Lamonte Dixon, 36, and Joseph Wendell Pettijohn, 35, self-described missionaries from the Indiana-based Harvestfield Ministries Pentecostal Church, bowed their heads as Adam read the verdict, but otherwise showed little emotion.

They face up to life imprisonment.
