Three of Western New York's four teams advanced Friday at the ninth annual Can-Am/PAL boys basketball tournament at Niagara University.
Buffalo GC beat Oakville, 72-54, Niagara PAL downed Scarboro, 93-83, and the Western New York Shooting Stars topped Hamilton, 70-41. USDBL (Upstate Developmental Basketball League) fell, 72-69, to Ontario.
The NCAA-certified tournament is a showcase for outstanding high school players on both sides of the border. The AAU tournament is considered one of the top tournaments in the East.
Anthony Ighodaro (Traditional) led Buffalo GC with 18 points and Daryl Jacobs (Traditional) added 12.
For the Shooting Stars, Ron James (Jamestown) connected for 17 points and Justin Miller (Southwestern) added 13.
In a game with a lot of local flavor, Buffalo GC will play the Shooting Stars today at 10:30 a.m. at the Kiernan Center.
Niagara PAL connected on 35 of 49 free throws in beating the Roadrunners. Jeff Milkowski (St. Joe's) tossed in 24 points while Jeff Street (Niagara Falls) added 23. Dewitt Doss (LaSalle) added 16 for the winners. PAL plays today at noon at the Kiernan Center against Syracuse.
USDBL let a 24-point lead slip away as Ontario's Taylor Brown banked in a 40-foot three-pointer with 2 seconds left. Julius Page (Turner/Carroll) led UDBL with 25 points and Ka'Ron Barnes (Turner/Carroll) added 19. UDBL led, 58-34, with 4:30 left in the third quarter before its collapse.
UDBL plays in the losers' bracket at 9:30 a.m. today against the loser of the Montreal/Atlantic City game. Admission to all games is free.
