Herman F. Wittkowsky Jr., 84, a veteran of World War II and devoted member of Frieden's United Church of Christ, died Thursday (Sept. 9, 1999) in DeGraff Memorial Hospital, North Tonawanda.
A lifelong resident of North Tonawanda, Wittkowsky worked at Schenck Hardware in North Tonawanda and at Cramer Industrial Supply Inc. for 32 years until he retired in 1981. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps from 1942 through 1946 and was discharged with the rank of captain.
Wittkowsky sang in the choir at Frieden's United Church of Christ for 53 years, was the Sunday school superintendent there for 16 years and was a Sunday school teacher. He enjoyed traveling, bowling, fishing and telling jokes.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, the former Ruth K. McQuilkin; a son, Stephen C.; a sister, Maurine Kick; and a brother, William C., all of North Tonawanda.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in the Wattengel Funeral Home, 307 Oliver St., North Tonawanda. Burial will be in Frieden's Cemetery.
