Williamsville South roared back from a 20-point halftime deficit to nip Williamsville East, 29-27, in Division II football action Thursday night.

South improved to 2-0 as a 15-yard scamper by Nick Martone late in the fourth quarter capped a three-touchdown second half for the freshman.

With South trailing, 27-7, at halftime, Martone took over, rushing for 143 yards on 22 carries, with TD runs of 28 and 9 yards respectively.

East (1-1) got three touchdowns from wideout Tom Wolf, including a 77-yarder from QB Brian Donnelly that opened the scoring.

In Division III, Williamsville North running back Chris McDuffie ran for 120 yards and scored four touchdowns as the Spartans (2-0) rolled to a 28-6 win over over Amherst (0-2).

McDuffie, a sophomore, carried the ball 20 times and caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Adam Fatzinger.

Running back Demond Sanders ran for 164 yards on 12 carries and scored two touchdowns as Cathedral Prep. of Erie, Pa. destroyed St. Francis, 57-0, in a non-league contest.
