State Sen. Anthony M. Nanula, despite his troubling refusal to commit to serving a complete term in office, remains the best of three candidates vying for the Democratic line in Buffalo's city comptroller race. Nanula brings the best blend of political and fiscal skills to this campaign for an office that must combine the abilities of a financial manager with a willingness to use the post as a "bully pulpit" in reviewing the efficiency of city government.

Herbert L. Bellamy Jr. offers his hands-on management experience as head of the Buffalo Sewer Authority and Richard Pawarski brings accounting skills and experience as the head of the audit division in the comptroller's office. Nanula, mentioned as a potential future state comptroller, is a better all-around candidate and deserves the chance to face Republican nominee Kevin Helfer in November.
