A 79-year-old man, reportedly suffering from dementia, wandered away from a nursing home near Rochester and bumped into his troubled past.
Monroe County Sheriff's deputies who found the man discovered through a routine criminal check that New York City police had been looking for him in connection with a 1974 slaying.
Now, police in New York City are considering whether to file charges against Phillip Ferro.
Ferro's life as a fugitive neared its end Aug. 2, when he walked away from the Hilton East Residential Home. Firefighters found him within 15 minutes, lying in a creek bed less than a quarter of a mile from the nursing home.
New York City Detective Maritza Sanchez, who investigates old homicide cases, said her department needed to talk with the Brooklyn district attorney's office before a decision would be reached regarding prosecution.
Details about the alleged crime are sketchy.
