A search team numbering in the hundreds has found the body of a toddler in 5 feet of water in the Black River.
Nicholas Smith, 2, was reported missing by his mother late Wednesday afternoon. A massive search began immediately. The body was found down a steep embankment on the shore of the Black River 600 yards from his home Thursday just before 5 p.m., police said.
Lewis County Sheriff Gary Jock said the site is considered a crime scene and an investigation continues.
State troopers and Army personnel from nearby Fort Drum assisted in the search. Troopers brought in a dozen bloodhounds to help them. Half a dozen helicopters and divers were also used.
