A Niagara Falls woman who received more than $20,000 in public assistance, food stamps and Medicaid benefits over a two-year period will be sentenced Oct. 20 by Niagara County Judge Peter L. Broderick.
Brenda L. Edwards, 36, of 1335 Willow Ave. pleaded guilty Wednesday to fourth-degree grand larceny and first-degree offering a false instrument for filing. The charges stem from two separate incidents that involved false information given when she applied for recertification at the county Department of Social Services.
Assistant District Attorney Marie Gisante, who is prosecuting the case, said that Ms. Edwards gave false information about her earnings as an independent contractor in newspaper delivery for the Niagara Gazette.
The second incident, involving $7,388 in benefits received between January and June 30, occurred while investigations were ongoing for the first incident, involving $12,906 between March 1997 and May 1998, Miss Gisante said.
