A scheduled debate between the Democratic candidates for mayor of Lackawanna apparently will be a one-sided affair with only John Kuryak likely to attend.
Kuryak said he will be at the Victoria Square banquet hall across from City Hall at 2 p.m. Saturday and invited residents to stop by and ask questions.
An invitation from Kuryak's campaign committee is going out to Mayor Kathleen M. Staniszewski, who said Wednesday that she will not attend.
"This is a farce, a setup," she said. "I want to debate him, but it should be done professionally with a moderator, not meeting in a bar."
Told of the mayor's comments, Kuryak said, "If she can't make it, it's no big deal. I just think there should be an open discussion of the issues."
He said he is still trying to arrange for someone from the League of Women Voters to serve as a moderator.
Kuryak said Republican candidate Richard Powers also is being invited.
