Men's basketball player James Keys has transferred to Canisius College from Bowling Green State University, Canisius announced. The Golden Griffins also announced that sophomore forward Alex Barnhill has decided not to return to school.

Keys, 21, averaged 5.8 points as a freshman in the 1997-98 season, including a career-high effort of 23 points against Ball State. Keys, who did not play at Bowling Green last year, will sit out this season due to NCAA rules and has two years of eligibility remaining.

The 6-foot-2 point guard takes the scholarship slot of Barnhill, who was expected to start for the Griffs this season. He started two games as a freshman and averaged 1.4 points and 1.0 rebounds.

"It's unfortunate that Alex decided not to return," said Griffins coach Mike MacDonald. "We felt he could help us this season at small forward. However, Jay has been interested in Canisius since last January and when the spot opened he eagerly accepted."

According to MacDonald, Barnhill indicated he wanted to remain closer to his family.
