DRIVER IN COLLISION CLEARED OF INTOXICATION CHARGE

An investigation into a July 14 accident between a car and a tractor-trailer in Lancaster has cleared the driver of the car of driving while intoxicated and led police to apologize for the initial charge.

In a letter to Philip A. Thielman, the lawyer for Donald J. Ritz, Police Chief Thomas E. Fowler said that investigators looking into the accident "determined that no alcohol was involved whatsoever."

"I respectfully request that you extend our apology to your client and his family," Fowler wrote.

Ritz, 25, of Marine Drive, suffered head, internal and other injuries when his vehicle collided head-on with a tractor-trailer on Genesee Street at Barton Road.

Ritz was hospitalized for nearly two months and is recovering at home from his injuries, Thielman said.
