Police on Wednesday accused a coupleof leaving their 18-month-old son to die in the wilderness and suspect they tossed his 2 1/2 -year-old brother to his death in a pond.
The mother had told police in June that the children had been kidnapped by their father. Last week, however, the father told police the couple abandoned one child in a ravine and threw the other into a pond.
Bones believed to be those of Alexander, the 18-month-old child, were discovered Friday.
Alex Ware, 33, and Chantilly Harrell, 21, of Memphis, Tenn., were charged with murder and jailed on $250,000 bail. They could face execution if convicted in the death of Alexander.
Prosecutors said they are considering filing murder charges in the case of the older boy, K-Von, whose remains have not been found, despite a five-day search and the draining of the pond.
As for a motive, prosecutor Fletcher Long Jr. said: "There's only conjecture at this point. They wanted (to get) rid of two children."
