The 358 Modifieds invade the Little Valley Speedway on Saturday for the first time.

The winner of the $2,000-to-win, 35-lap race on the half-mile oval will get his or her choice of a guaranteed starting spot in either the Victoria 200 run at Fulton Speedway or the Sunoco DIRT 358 Modified Championship at the New York State Fairgrounds during Super DIRT in Syracuse. Both events will be run in October.

The Little Valley winner gets first pick and Saturday's runner-up gets into the other race.

Entries are expected from Joe Plazek, Curt Van Pelt, Jamie Turner, Walt Mitchell, Lyle Sherwood, Steve Hartman, Stacy Jackson, Dylan Dewart, Tony Harris, Mike Brenning, Mike Jackson and Ransomville Speedway representative Mark Sylvies in the starting field of 26. The purse will be enhanced with $3,000 awarded to the field through contingency programs.

After years of being inactive for motorsports, Little Valley reopened two years ago, featuring ESS Sprint Car competition. Gates open Saturday at 3 p.m. with racing to start at 6. A 35-lap $2,000-to-win Late Model event plus racing for Super Stocks, Street Stocks and school buses will also be on the card. For race and camping information, call 938-9146.

Glen has vintage weekend

Watkins Glen International presents its annual Zippo U.S. Vintage Grand Prix Weekend, Friday through Sunday. The Ikepod Grand Prix Festival begins in downtown Watkins Glen on Friday at noon. At the track, the SVRA group practice also will run.

Saturday, an antique auto exhibition parade lap plus SVRA qualifying races and the MG Collier Cup race take center stage. Sunday, the SVRA group races and the IMSA GTP race take to the track. For more information call 607-535-2486.

Pit stops

Genesee Speedway will host twin 40-lap features Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The 40-lap Hoosier Tire/Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRT Sportsman Championship Trail race and the 40-lap Hoosier Tire Mr. DIRT Pro-Stock Championship Trail event will headline the action.

The Mini-Stocks and Pure Stocks will complete the card, which is Genesee's season finale. Genesee season point champions crowned last weekend include, Brian Sage, DIRT Sportsman; Jim Johnson, Super Stock; Dave Schulz, DIRT Pro-Stock; Jim Dale, Mini-Stock and Bobby Lippa Jr., Pure-Stock.

Freedom Raceway will host its rescheduled New York State Super Late Model Championship Friday at 7:30 p.m. The NAPA King Of The Hill race, mechanics races, a powder puff event, Street Stocks, Mini-Stocks and a fan appreciation bonfire complete the activity.

Freedom will begin its fall five-week Saturday "Run What Ya Brung" series, Sept. 18 at 6 p.m.

Boston's Ron Smoker, in a nationally televised USAC Midget race on ESPN2 last Wednesday, placed a strong third in the Hut Hundred, a legendary 100-lap annual Midget happening at Terre Haute, Ind. Smoker started 24th.

Holland Speedway will conclude its NASCAR Winston Racing Series season Saturday at 5 p.m. with the double point Winston All-Season Championships.

All weekly NASCAR Winston Racing Series classes plus the MBNA Cup Lite Racing Series and a Challenger/Enduro will all be part of the curtain-closing program.

Ransomville Speedway has double point races on deck for the Sportsman, Pro-Stocks and Street Stocks Friday at 7:15 p.m. A 20-lap non-winners 358 Modified special and a Four-Cylinder demo derby also will take place.
