Charles A. Spittler Sr., 90, who owned and operated Spittler General Store in Lake View, died Tuesday (Sept. 7, 1999) in Our Lady of Victory Hospital, Lackawanna.
Born in Lake View, he began working in the store on Lake View Road at the age of 16 for his father, who founded the business in the early 1900s. He later took it over and operated it until 1970.
He also was a school bus driver for Frontier Central School District for 33 years.
He was a 70-year member of the Lake View Volunteer Fire Co. and Benevolent Association. He served as a fire commissioner for 33 years.
He was a past master of Evans Lodge 261, F&AM, and a member of Cornerstone Lodge 1176, F&AM; Ismailia Temple; and the Grand Commandery Knights Templar of New York State.
He also was a member of the Lake View Congregational Church.
He is survived by his wife, the former Dorothy A. Keller, whom he married in 1928; a daughter, Betty N. Blakely of Lake View; a brother, Donald "Duke" of Lake View; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Lake View Congregational Church, 2043 Lake View Road.
