Work will begin today to restore Quaker Lake at Allegany State Park by lowering the level of the water.

The lake will be lowered about 10 feet, according to George M. Wyman, assistant director of parks, to permit work on the restoration project.

The work, funded by the state 1996 Clean Water/Clean Air Bond Act, includes removal of sediment from the southern end of the lake and mouth of Quaker Run Creek, realigning and regrading the creek, installing heavy stone fill and planting for stream bank stabilization and general site restoration.

The contractor is UCC Constructors Inc. of West Seneca. Work is expected to be completed in time to fill the lake prior to the fishing season next spring.
